Because Hallstatt has a very small graveyard, there is still
an old custom that when there is not place enough anymore
on the graveyard, that they take out the remains of the
oldest grave (after at least ten years). These remains will
be cleaned and put away in a small 'beinhaus'. The bones
under a table and the skulls on the tables. On the skull
they paint the name of the death person and most of the
time also some flowers, leaves, crosses etc. The 'youngest
skull' is from 1983
Today there is the possibility for relatives to keep on
the grave for more than ten years.
